The minimalist design of Bashan parallels the cuisine by focusing on the fundamental, necessary elements. The design was born out of practical consideration for the quaint size of the space. In essence, people in chairs and beautiful food on tables are the principal decorations of the space. With no floor space to spare, we decided to think vertically in terms of décor and mood. The character driftwood juxtaposes the natural elements of the ocean with the cuisine. The grass wall coverings add texture and create an organic feeling. The lights—while symmetrical—mimic layers found in an onion or artichoke. The custom walnut wine rack blends form and function by allowing us to cellar our wines as well as insulate the kitchen from the dining space. |
